Charlie

Charlie’s Story

I was married in July of 2003. Soon after we got married my husband was deployed to Afghanistan. In an effort to keep me busy I got the Golden Retriever puppy I had always wanted. When I contacted the breeder and asked for a girl she didn’t have any left, so I took a boy. When I meet her to pick him up, the puppy she handed me was not the one I had origionally picked out. I didn’t care, I just wanted my puppy.
My cousin had recently lost her dog and also decided to get a puppy from the same litter. We noticed that Charlie had a diamond shaped piece missing from his left ear and my cousin’s puppy had an extra piece (a diamond chapped piece) on the end of his ear. He had Charlie’s missing piece! It was obvious that these boys were supposed to be together!
Soon after I got Charlie he started developing multiple genetic medical conditions. In the first few years of his life he had to have several surgeries, special food and lots of medications. It was apparent that Charlie needed me as much as I needed him. I could not help but to think that if someone else would have gotten him maybe they wouldn't or couldn't afford to take care of him. He was meant to be mine.
With the help of the best veterinarian I’ve even know, Charlie was able to live a relatively normal and happy life. I fell in love with obedience with Charlie. He was also the first dog I had certified as a Therapy Dog. He was in a commercial and did volunteer work for Celebrities Against Autism. He was also on channel 2. I took Charlie to work every day for the four years I worked at Camp Bow Wow where he stayed in the lobby and worked as a greeter to keep the customers busy when they were waiting for there dogs.
Whenever I was sick and stuck in bed, Charlie with out question was in bed by my side, for days on end if need be. When I cried he was right there to lick my tears away. All I had to do was talk to him and he knew what I was saying and what I wanted. We had an amazing bond.
Charlie is the reason I feel totally in love with the breed and the reason I became a responsible breeder. He is truly a once in a life time dog. I will never have another dog like him because he was not only my pet but a great friend. I will never forget him, and will forever miss him.

To Charlie,

We may have only had seven years together, but I would not trade that time for anything. Until The day we meet again, I will hold you close to my heart. I will always love you.
Your Friend,
Stephanie
